1.9. New Perimeter and Global Probono

As law rms have gone global, so has pro bono. While the United States and
Australia have a deep history of pro bono engagement, other countries have
been slower to embrace the idea for several reasons. Some countries have a
history of extensive government support for legal aid, which has lessened
the need for private rms to help ll the gaps in access to justice. In other
countries, protective bar associations have restricted —and in some cases
banned— pro bono in the mistaken apprehension that lawyers doing pro
bono are somehow diverting potential billable work from other lawyers.1 But
the rise of global law rms with dedicated pro bono programs has driven
increased pro bono engagement by lawyers outside of the United States.
e creation of global pro bono clearinghouses such as net, Trustlaw, and
A4ID has also contributed to this trend. Some rms have gone beyond the
borders of their home oces to undertake pro bono projects in developing
countries where they may not have a business presence.  Piper’s New
Perimeter program is an instructive example of this phenomenon.
In 2005,  Piper created New Perimeter, a unique nonprot aliate
dedicated to delivering pro bono assistance primarily in developing and
post-conict countries. rough New Perimeter, teams of lawyers from
