RESUMEN
En los últimos años se ha presentado un importante incremento en el ingreso de turistas a Medellín,
por lo que grandes cadenas internacionales de hoteles, están haciendo presencia en la ciudad; y las
existentes, amplían su oferta con la construcción de nuevas instalaciones y/o la remodelación de su
infraestructura. Sin embargo, se evidencia que la ocupación hotelera no crece al mismo ritmo que lo
hace el número de turistas. El objetivo de esta investigación es explorar el sector de la hotelería formal
de gran formato y el fenómeno del hospedaje informal o paralelo en la ciudad de Medellín,
considerando aspectos legales y operativos. Para ello, además de la revisión de literatura y el análisis
de los informes presentados por entidades relacionadas con el sector turístico, se realizaron entrevistas

a empleados de dos Cadenas Hoteleras que hacen presencia en Medellín con ocho establecimientos.
Como resultado, se evidencia que el uso de plataformas de la llamada economía colaborativa, no
obstante su condición de ilegalidad, está siendo cada vez más frecuente tanto para la oferta como la
demanda de servicios de hospedaje, constituyéndose en un gran perjuicio para la ciudad y el sector
formal de hotelería.

ABSTRACT
In recent years there has been a significant increase in the entry of tourists to Medellín, which is why
large international hotel chains are making a presence in the city; and the existing ones, expand their
offer with the construction of new facilities and / or the remodeling of their infrastructure. However,
it is evident that hotel occupancy does not grow at the same rate as the number of tourists. The
objective of this research is to explore the large format formal hospitality sector and the phenomenon
of informal or parallel accommodation in the city of Medellín, considering legal and operational
aspects. To do this, in addition to reviewing the literature and analyzing the reports presented by
entities related to the tourism sector, interviews were conducted with employees of two hotel chains
that are present in Medellín with eight establishments. As a result, it is evident that the use of platforms
of the so-called collaborative economy, despite its illegality, is becoming more and more frequent
both for the supply and demand of accommodation services, constituting a great damage to the city
and the formal hotel sector.
