Abstract. The following paper is dedicated to one of the most intriguing grammar question s, which is the
acquisition of gra mmatical gender in a foreign language. A survey presents the diffic ulties in acquiri ng the
Polish grammatical gender by Russian and Serbian students. In the survey Polish gender was widely presented in
a comparative and descriptive -analytical aspect. The morphological and structural features in their similarities
and differences with the learners’ native language are presented.
The issue of grammatical gende r has been the object of analysis for many authors but t o this day there is not one
complete elaboration of this issue and many question s still remain to be investigated. A more contemporary
comparison a nd especially one including a representative of each Slavic language group seems indispensable.
There is also a need to change the way grammatical gender is presented in class. It is advisable to implement a
more active approach in the d idactic process of acquisition through the use of task-based learning and content-
based teaching as well as to take into account cultural factors. As a res ult, gender aquisition would be made more
attractive and life-oriented.
Key words: grammatical gender, Slavic languages, Polish , Russian, Serbian, gender acquisition.
